Oglethorpe University Students for Life Hosting Great Event on March 26 - Our Help is Needed
Below is a combination of several e-mails sent out recently by Oglethorpe’s SFU President, Laura Callender:
“I am writing you to ask for your help on behalf of Oglethorpe University Students for Life. OU Students for Life is the only pro-life organization at Oglethorpe. I helped found the club last semester and am now serving as president.
Our club plans to host a speaker from Feminists for Life on March 26. For those of you that don’t know, Feminists for Life is an organization that is dedicated to eliminating the things that pressure women into having abortions. Planned Parenthood described their college outreach as “the most challenging” new “anti-choice” campus program. That’s because, when people hear FFL speakers, they realize that they can be pro-woman and pro-life, and become much more open to other pro-life arguments. It’s also because FFL works with colleges to improve services for pregnant and parenting students so women don’t feel like they have to choose between their education and their child.
For those of you who are Oglethorpe alums, you know how badly we need help from FFL. Our school provides practically nothing for pregnant/parenting students right now…we don’t even have diaper changing tables in the ladies’ rooms.
The student body at Oglethorpe is mostly pro-choice. However, they are also fairly open-minded and extremely interested in human rights. Therefore, they would probably be very receptive to an FFL speaker. I fully expect that, if we can work with FFL, we will save lives….”
The OU Students for Life have been working hard since that e-mail to raise the required honorarium for Karen Shablin, and have encountered some challenges, as Laura subsequently wrote about:
“First, I just want to thank all of you who have helped us to raise money for Karen Shablin’s honorarium. Your donations, your prayers, and your efforts to spread the word mean the world to us as a group as well as to me personally. I am truly blessed to have people like you in my life, and I cannot thank you enough…
...we recently asked our Student Association to help us cover about 25% of the cost for this event, and they turned us down. According to our representative who was at the meeting, the vote was nearly unanimous, and the problem seemed to be that they did not understand why we couldn’t simply go hear Ms. Shablin speak somewhere else instead of bringing her to campus.
The answer to this question, of course, is that we need other Oglethorpe students, not just the members of our group, to hear Feminists for Life’s message. We want Oglethorpe students, faculty, and staff to be aware of the need to provide resources for pregnant women, and we want them to see that it is possible, and even makes sense, to be both pro-woman and pro-life. This can happen only if the lecture is held on our own campus.”
Finally yesterday, Laura sent out the following update:
“It is now two weeks until the lecture and, thanks to your generosity, it is still going to happen! So far, we have raised over half of our goal, and have about $800 more to raise. Thank you to everyone who donated and who gave us advice! We still have plenty of outlets to explore to raise the rest of the money.
That said, of course, we still need your help. To raise $800 means that I and some of the other club members will have to spend a considerable amount of our Spring Break/Holy Week fundraising. If you think you can help us, we’d really appreciate it!...
…P.S. We found out that it is better to make out checks to Oglethorpe University and put OU Students for Life on the “for” line. Those of you who already sent us checks made out to OU Students for Life should still get a tax deduction. Please expect a receipt from us by the end of the month if you have already donated. If you send us a check in the next couple of weeks, please expect a receipt by April 10.”
