2 John 1:4-6 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Jesus’ Love-Command.  Topics:  2 at end.

This letter, written by the Apostle John is to a Christian lady and her children.
Walking in the Truth
I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father. Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”  (WEB)  (Read this scripture and more at

What is love?  Walking according to God’s commandments.  And what is one of those . . . a huge one?  John 15:7 “Thus I command you to love one another.”  (WEY)

Sounds simple, doesn’t it?  And it is!  But sometimes simplicity is hard to live by.  Sometimes lots of things get in the way of carrying out a simple command.  “How can I love that person?  How can I love persons to different from me, persons who do not pay a bit of attention to the Lord Jesus I love so much?”

Well, it doesn’t depend upon us totally.  In reality, we cannot love all persons . . . not in our natural, fallen condition.  But the Lord Jesus can, and does!  He came not for just a few of us earthlings; He came for all of us.

I Timothy 2:1-4 . . . “I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.”  (WEB)

So we see how He loves all people.  And it is He Who will help us do the same.  When there is someone over whom we are having a real struggle with love, He does it for us.  But, of course, we need to ask Him to do this and to help us carrying the actions of love.  But when we ask in His will, we know that we have what we have requested (John 14:14).

The Lord Jesus loves us in our most despicable state.  He loves all people in their most despicable states.  Especially knowing this about ourselves, that He loves us “in spite of,” we can trust Him to help us fulfill the command to love one another.

Lord, we may find it very difficult, in pro-LIFE work, to love two categories of persons:  The family in anguish because of an unexpected pregnancy – but whose poor choices brought this about . . . ; and some of our co-workers in the ministry for LIFE who have entirely different outlooks on pathways to follow in serving.  Lord, we see how important it is that we LOVE.  So we ask You for grace to love through us, and to bring about love in our hearts . . . true love.  Godly love.

Then, Lord, we will be able to serve with and work with folks not of our choosing, knowing that You choose them and will help us bring good things out of situations in which we find it difficult to LOVE.

Topics:  Pray to obey our Lord’s command to love; and trust Him for the difficult times of loving others.
