2 Timothy 1:3-5 (Pt. 4)  Thought/Prayer:  Unfeigned.  Topics:  2 at end.

“I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of you in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in you, which dwelled first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in you also.”  AKJ (Read this scripture and more at

Paul praises the faith of Timothy’s mother and grandmother and credits them with helping to bring him to faith through their own witnesses of faith.  We see also that in this passage Paul credits his forefathers with presenting this witness also.

But perhaps Paul has a special affection for Timothy’s “foremothers.”  He seems to take special care to describe the faith of these two special women in Timothy’s life.  He recalls unfeigned faith.  When we feign something, what do we do?  We act as though it is different from the way it is.  We pretend.  None of that here!

These ladies have faith pure and natural, holy we might perhaps say.  And Paul is convinced that he sees it also in their son/grandson Timothy.  What a beautiful epitaph this would make for these godly women:  “Within Her: Unfeigned Faith.”  No pretense here.  Praise God for the record of this written down and passed down through the ages, through God’s Word the Bible.

This has special meaning for me, the writer here:  my mother’s name was Lois, and she was a woman of faith also.

That there have been godly women through the ages, yes – foremothers—perhaps we could say, is a boost to any person seeking truth.

Because many women have made their life’s work to be mothers and homemakers, perhaps they at times have had more time to devote to spiritual matters.  By not going to work out of the home every day, there may have been more moments to quietly step aside from the work and think on things beyond family and work.  This is not to say that homemakers sit around and wonder what to do all day.  No, the work of a mother/homemaker is greatly demanding.  Women have played a key role in the passing along of faith.  In some circumstances maybe they have a bit more time to dwell on the things of the spirit.

However it is, we are blessed to know of these two Biblical women in particular, singled out for a bit of praise from one of the greatest Christians of Bible days, the Apostle Paul.  Lord, thank you.  Thank you that we can know of these two ladies and the influence they had on Timothy.  Help us as we work for pro-life causes to remember to hold our faith unfeigned and pure and holding the promise of help to anyone with whom we come in contact.

Topics:  Pray for the ability to model Biblical persons in our lives today, with unfeigned faith and the desire to pass it on to those coming after us.
