2 Timothy 1:3-5 (Pt. 4)  Thought/Prayer: From My Forefathers. Topics: 2 at end.

“I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of you in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in you, which dwelled first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in you also.”  AKJ (Read this scripture and more at

Paul here gives great credit to his forefathers.  We can see that Paul serves God “from” his forefathers.  Perhaps he could have said, to paraphrase a bit, that his forefathers passed down their faith along the lines of time down through the ages until it came to Paul.  He knew that his physical heritage came down from forefathers; that’s the way this generations thing works.  We are all products of those who came before us.  That is why, when reviewing family photos, we note how much cousin Charlie may look like his great great great grandfather Buford.

Paul credits his ancestors with the passing along of faith.  By this he must mean, in part, that because of their lifestyles of faith, the generations in reverse have modeled lives of faith.  These lives were remembered through the generations by oral tradition or by the recording of annals.  But, do we have faith just because someone in our past does, or someone living today?

No, faith must come through each individual.  As an old saying says, “God has no grandchildren.”  In other words, we can’t claim Jesus as our Savior just because mom or dad or great grandma believed. No, we must decide that for ourselves as to whether Jesus Christ will be Lord of our lives.  But there is certainly a place for our forefathers here.

Because we know of people from our past or those who are presently in our lives, we may gain a good idea of what it is to be of faith . . . and to be faithful.  This may help us lean our lives in the direction of faith.  But when it comes down to making Jesus our Lord, it’s only first-generation; we don’t rest on the laurels of faith from family past.  But isn’t it comforting to know that those from the past who did believe, did the same things as we?  They humbled themselves, asked for forgiveness, and asked the Lord into their lives and hearts.  Now that’s kinship!

Lord, we thank you for past family members who loved you and passed that love down through generations.  We would now pray that we can be the same type of example for those who come after us, living now or far into the future.  Maybe in the year 2075 someone will remember a “great” person from the past who was acclaimed as a great believer.  We pray that there will be such people in the lives of families who go through tremendous hardship to bring new life in to the world although tempted to destroy it before birth.

Topics:  Praise God for ancestors of faith.  Pray that we may help others because of our “pull” toward the spiritual because we have seen it modeled or heard of that.
