Acts 10:19 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Vision or Voice.  Topics:  2 at end.

“While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.”  KJV (Read this scripture and more at

Here Peter is, pondering a vision, perplexed.  And Who breaks into his thoughts but the Holy Spirit!  Isn’t this grand!?  Boy, do we wish this could happen to us!

Well, maybe it does.  But probably differently.  We know that God works in many ways, and with Peter, God chose the direct approach.  (Peter seemed to be a very direct person, immediately saying what he thought about things, being impulsive, as when he jumped onto the sea when he saw Jesus walking on the water.)  (I say he jumped onto the sea because that is what he did; he didn’t jump out of the boat and into the sea – well not until, as he himself walked on the water toward Jesus, he realized his surroundings and let fear take over, thus sinking into the sea.)

So, for whatever reasons, God chose a very visual and direct approach to get Peter’s attention.  But for most of us, our instructions from the Holy Spirit are much more subtle and without visions.  But He does interrupt us.

We might say that people, in general, have to be thinking about something all the time.  It’s very difficult to clear one’s mind of the thoughts that crowd into it.  When someone may tell us to put everything out of our minds, to think of nothing – well, we don’t know how!

So, since we are always thinking, either intentionally or at random, when the Spirit speaks to us He is interrupting “something” going on in our heads.  We may recognize His voice more easily if we are actually in prayer or reading our Bibles at the time.  But we know He interrupts our personal thought-life at other times, seemingly out of the blue, as we say.

Does it have to be some huge thought, something mind-boggling?  No, although sometimes it is.  We’re told in scripture that He speaks to us in a small voice, in the quiet (I Kings 19:12).  However it is, it’s wonderful, and many Christian ministries (all, really) are begun by someone’s hearing this voice.  And some even today do have visions.  What a blessing.

As we think of the Lord’s plan for our pro-life work, we may come to certain conclusions, guided by His voice.  Whether we see an actual vision or not, His speaking to us is of utmost importance.  We must remain open to Him; we need to ask to hear His voice however it comes to us.

Lord, help us to be open to Your voice.  Your Spirit is so perfectly able to convey your directions for our lives.  We ask that you convict us to listen and then make us able to hear, no matter if we also see as in a vision, or if we only hear You.  We just want to know, and then follow, as Peter did.

Topics:  Pray for the ability to hear God’s voice concerning LIFE work, no matter the means in which He conveys His will for us.
