Acts 17:10,11(Pt. 3)Thought/Prayer:Reading Scripture?Noble?Topics 2:@end.

“And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”  KJV  (Read this scripture and more at

The word “noble” here is “notable.”  Why, in this KJV, is this word used when referring to the Bereans’ great habit of desiring to receive God’s Word and to study it diligently?  Noble?  Yes, it’s what it says.

What do we think of when we define the word, noble?  Perhaps we think of persons we have known of who stood for the very best and were very certain to deserve great honor for their defense of the best.  Or we may have a mind-picture of the great nobles of past history, especially those under the rule of kings, those who would fight to the end for their monarch and all that the kingship stood for.  Such persons might be members of a noble class of persons, so designated by the monarch.

So why would that word be used here?  All we’re talking about here is some folks reading scripture.

Reading God’s Word is a noble activity.  It actually is.  It is, because we are reading the most excellent words; we are reading the most excellent in guidance in the form of any printed word.  The Person who wrote it (God-breathed it) is the most noble entity in the all of creation.

We should know that the scriptures occur in our lives as noble guides.  We who study the Word of God are persons of the highest order, a God-created nobility if you will, but not because of our accomplishments to gain being dubbed noble.  It is because of the Person who wrote the words that we are noble.  And, to study His words is to seek His heart, his heart-felt instructions to us.

Lord, in this scripture, You are obviously honoring those of us seeking to be near Your heart through Your Word.  Help us to desire this from ourselves.  Lord, would you inspire this desire in us, daily, second by second?  Then we will be able to better discern Your will for us and to apply it in our service to others, pro-life and otherwise, nobly, hopefully, but only because of Your grace.

Topics:  Pray for desire to seek God’s word so that we may glean from it our directions for service in our world.
