Acts 2:1-13 Thought/Prayer: About Languages. Topics: 2 at end.
“Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.
“Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under the sky. When this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, ‘Behold, aren’t all these who speak Galileans? How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians: we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of God!’ They were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, ‘What does this mean?’ Others, mocking, said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’” WEB (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)
I heard it said that God understands all languages. Well, of course! He invented them! Who else could it be that brought the different languages and dialects into our world? For His own reasons He put it into the design of mankind to be able to speak and to understand different languages. Could you suddenly know French and also know how it got into your head? How about Russian? Or Swahili? To consider it, think how many different sounds and inflections there are in any language – but to understand them in all languages? No human way!
Just look at all of the different languages represented in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. Fifteen nations are mentioned. And the twelve disciples are all together, and they suddenly know how to speak other languages! Talk about surprise! Talk about amazement.
How could this be?! I speak Aramaic, and suddenly I’m conversing in Phoenician or Parthian?
Someone had to know all of these languages. Each and every one. Did the disciples gathered there know them all? Of course not. But they were heard speaking all of these . . . recognized by those citizens of all those countries listed.
Languages can confuse and be difficult. Some languages have many words for one word in another. Some languages have one word for many in another. Some, such as English, are made up of many other languages. The word buffet, for example: As a noun, and having to do with a display of food, it is from French. Gringo, such as a foreign person in Mexico, comes from Spanish.
But there is something really interesting about hearing someone speak fluently in another tongue. There is the smooth French. There is the gusto of German. Spanish seems to be a happy language with lots of syllables. God must have enjoyed coming up with all of these differences . . . to make speaking interesting perhaps!
But in any language, the truth of the gospel, the truth of Jesus Christ (He is the Truth [John 14:6]) can be shared. Some people are called to make their life’s work one of translating God’s Word into different languages. This just shows the importance of this to the God of language; it’s important enough for Him to call people to get His message out to all peoples, all languages.
Lord, we appreciate all of the different languages we have from Your creation. Life would be less interesting (and sometimes less challenging also) without the varied words of communicating that you have given us. But may we be certain to do well with the native language you have instilled into each of us. . . may we do well to communicate Your gospel well to those who need it, those who are in our sphere of influence. Help us to use our words well when sharing with those who face LIFE issues seemingly over and over.
Topics: Pray for the ability to communicate clearly the love of Jesus to those in conflict over LIFE issues.
