We earthlings have an extra day this year. Today. A whole 24 hours’ worth, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds. God has us and our “times” in His hand during every one. Gee, what’ll I do with over 86 thousand extra seconds?
Let’s see, I could pray for 30 minutes (using up 1,800 seconds) or walk for an hour to gobble up 3,600 seconds . . . well, sort of gobble – exercise is in a bit of a different category from most enjoyable of activities such as gobbling dinner . . . .
It’s interesting, this need to add a day every four years. We know that God’s timing and clockwork for the universe is never “off.” But because of the certain need to match the calendar year with the solar year, an extra day is designated every four years, thus fairly well “catching up” with the fact that it actually takes Earth approximately 365 ¼ days to travel its orbit around its star, our sun.
We won’t get into the issue of whether the extra day came before the “1/4ths” happened, or after they had occurred. God doesn’t need our earthly calendars to carry on the orbit around the sun. But those of us on Earth have needed a way to measure time, and God surely must have planned to put calendars in our lives!
Whatever we do with February 29th, we should be appreciative because without it many scheduled things would succumb to the vagaries of calendars. The plan for hundreds of years has been to limit vagaries!
Whatever we do on leap-year day, perhaps we should make it a special day for worship. Here we have this unique day, and we shouldn’t squander it. If we were in an attitude of prayer for the entire day, we would rack up (waking hours of an average of 16) 57,888 seconds. Talk about being intensely in conversation with our God!
We must not leap over the fact that every second of this unique day “counts” wherein the preborn are considered. A baby in the womb does not know that he or she is living through an “extra’ day. And we just trust doctors to factor in this day if there is anything unusual about the length of someone’s pregnancy. There again, God knows all about leap year and pregnancy.
Lord, we pray today that we can make something special for you, out of February 29th. Help us to use all of our day/hours/minutes/
seconds totally for you.
