Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer:  Lay-Away.  Topics:  2 at end.

Remember God’s Words
Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign on your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven on the earth.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

Another thought about God’s words.  We are to lay up these words” in our hearts.  To lay them up?  Well, might we think of a different type of “lay-away” plan?  Some department stores will this plan in effect wherein a customer chooses an item and then the store keeps it; the customer pays so much a month, usually without interest, until the purchase is paid for.  Then it goes home with the customer!

Now, a lay-away plan with scripture would not be the same of course; we don’t put Bible verses away on a shelf and pay on them a little at a time.  But . . . maybe there is something to “laying them up.”  Maybe we could picture the verses safely stored on a beautiful golden shelf . . . not to be paid for . . . but to be used:  Used when needed!  We could picture them as words . . . sentences . . . stacked like books; or boxes of them like shoe boxes; or beautiful round decorative containers in which hats are kept.

We don’t lay them “away” as in “put-away-never-to-be-seen-again.  No!  They are there, stored for easy access when needed.  They are already “paid for,” through God’s book of words, the Bible.

It’s just a thought here.  But the scripture does speak of laying them up.  Picturing a closet full of them waiting to be pulled off and used could be a real mental resource.

Of course, laying them up actually means to memorize them.  Shelf after shelf of memorized verses could make a closet beautiful.  But even those that are not totally memorized can have a big impact with just a few words of a certain verse that then leads us to find the verse and its entire meaning.

Well, as we pray for those in LIFE crises, let us be faithful to store up God’s Word, however we do it.  Then we can offer wisdom to those families who need it so much.

Topics:  Pray to be as familiar with God’s Word as He would have us, for use in life’s walkways with others in need.
