Eph. 4:1 (Pt. 3) Thought/Prayer: How Do We Know Our Ministries? Topics: 2 at end.
“I, the prisoner in [the] Lord, exhort you therefore to walk worthy of the calling wherewith ye have been called,” . . . DARBY Http:// http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http:// prayerpivot.com)
Does it seems that some people just have more of a purpose in life, more than you or I may experience? Does it seem that some fellow Christians just are definitely called to their ministry through some really great and God-orchestrated occurrences? They serve wonderfully and fully, enjoying every minute it seems, never doubting their Christian pathway as seen through the eyes of Christ.
And then there are you and I. Maybe we don’t have some great “gift” such as of oratory for sermons, stage presence for a ministry in acting, or the gift of evangelism so definitely observed by others who have come to Christ through testimonies of these folks. Maybe we just think we can’t serve because at no time can we look back and point to a time and place where we were pressed into service in the Lord.
We look at the pathway of a great evangelist who calls throngs to a stadium to hear the Good News. We wonder why we can’t just “know” our calling in the same manner.
But, if we have read biographies of such persons, often they had no clue up front as to their ministry. I read the life story of one man who didn’t know he had the gift of evangelism until people started filling up and overflowing church pews to hear him. The people knew he was called! Sort of a calling in reverse, it seems.
There is one factor seen in the Bible that comes to me as I ponder this situation of serving in different capacities. It is this: Jesus came as a servant “. . . as indeed the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mt. 20:28) DARBY. Of course, someone feeling less than certain about Christian service could say, “Sure, but He was God. It was different for Him. He already had his calling when He was born a human baby.” Yes, that is true.
And yet, even though he came from Heaven and returned there, he was willing to come here to Earth as—- a servant. Do servants get much glory? Do they represent a working class of highly-honored achievers? No, they do not. But if we struggle with ministry decisions, just think of our Lord who quietly went about performing acts of goodness without rank or accolades from the leaders of the day.
It’s possible that gifts for those who have doubt about their service, include that of servant. Although often unseen, servant Christians may just keep the faith going in myriad ways. Not that everyone who doesn’t seem to have a direct line to God about serving should think their gift to be service. But it just might be.
Lord, help us to be satisfied with our calling, whatever it is or however it comes to us. We may not recognize it for some time. But You do. Help us to seek Your face when we consider how best to serve You. It just may be that we are to be servants for LIFE in the world.
