Ezra 9:5,6   Thought/Prayer:  A Blush.  Topics:  2 at end.

Ezra’s Prayer of Confession
And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to the LORD my God, And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up to the heavens.”  (AKJV)  Read this scripture and more at

The prophet Ezra has just learned that the Israelites had greatly sinned by not separating themselves from the ungodly peoples of the other lands.  He was totally astonished when learning of this. And he calls out to God, confessing the sins of the people, even blushing at the mention of them.

So do we blush over our sin, before God?  We should pray that we do.  Really, there isn’t much said today about blushing it would seem.  Maybe we all try to cover up our reactions to others’ words when they are a bit off-color; or we resist acknowledging even to ourselves that something we have done or thought deserves blushing.  We’re sometimes pretty good at stonewalling our emotions, suppressing them or ignoring them.

What is blushing?  Maybe embarrassment?  When we’re falling in love, may we blush a bit when someone notices and teases us about it?  Do we blush a bit embarrassed when someone singles us out for something . . . even a good compliment, and everyone is looking at us?

But to blush over our sin . . . Yes, perhaps our sin is an embarrassment before God.  Of course, He knows our sin and that we deserve to blush when we tell Him all about it and agree that we are guilty.  But tell Him we must in order to ask and receive His forgiveness.

For women who find themselves needing to confess before the Lord in the area of life/death/and choices, there may be lots of embarrassment in blushes along with tears and agonies in feelings.  Some women do not know that forgiveness is there for them when they have committed moral sin.  It is up to those of us who know them and their situation to assure them that God accepts our words of confession and understands how embarrassed we are to have to tell him.

Lord, help us be vulnerable to blushing when we face our sin and need to agree with you about how bad it is.  But let us also be available to those who struggle with sin that leads to difficult life choices, such as a out-of-wedlock pregnancy.  Please help us, Lord, to show your love to such persons and to help them receive Your forgiveness and to help them go on to good and positive choices for LIFE.

Topics:  Pray for wisdom to help those who are blushing from their sin and are afraid of its results.  Help us to help them, Lord, because we understand from our own lives how difficult it can be to believe that God really does understand and will forgive and help build the future.
