We Christians deal with both a mind-set and a heart-set. We all know we have mind-sets that influence how we see life, that shape our thoughts and actions often without our really being aware of it. Lots of impressions from our lives can shape these sets of our minds – they really become sets of our outlook on life in many ways. We know that these ways of thinking become so automatic that we may not totally be aware of controlling these ways of thinking – or of the need to.
Heart-sets are similar but different. We speak here of our hearts’ attitudes toward God. And HE, although invisible to us physically, is always a given entity in a Christian’s life and thus is always “there” to remind us how to give our hearts’ intents over to Him. In other words, when we consider mind-sets and heart-sets, with our hearts we always have this “other” Being Who reminds us about our hearts continually, and especially in prayer. Of course He is in our minds also, but in our prayers perhaps our hearts become more greatly involved and inclined toward Him.
We want a heart-set toward the will of God when we pray. It should be into His heart that we pray, and to do this, we must want what is in His heart to be what is in our hearts. In prayer, we cultivate our heart toward Him. Along with the thoughts in our prayers, our heart’s involvement in prayer grows in the fertile soil of our attitude, our heart-set.
Lord, help us to have a heart-set that is pleasing to You. We know our thoughts matter to you when we pray. But our hearts’ attitudes can influence and guide the thoughts in a sweeter way. Help us to know how to do this, how to be so humble before you that our heart-sets are beautiful to You. Pray for this is spill over into our prayers for LIFE.
