I Corinthians 10:1-4 (Pt. 4)  Thought/Prayer:  Hope and Stay.  Topics:  2 at end.

Warnings from Israel’s Past
Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.”  (WEB)  (Read this scripture and more at

“. . . The rock was Christ.”  The rock is Christ.  If Jesus Christ was ever the Rock (and He was) then He is the Rock because He is eternal.  And here we will take a last look at the lyrics of this hymn about Him, “The Solid Rock.”  Let us consider some of the meanings with which so many can identify.  This has to do with “darkness” veiling His lovely face and all around (your) or my “soul gives way.”  Is this not the condition of so many of us when circumstances and problems, even tragedy, overwhelm?  We may feel that an anchor of our soul has no grip any more.  To see “His lovely face” may seem a long-past dream.

Those known to us, or unknown, who are in the grips of LIFE issues such as the future of the aging elderly or the mentally handicapped may feel this way.  What they need is to know of Christ’s unchanging grace and the security of being anchored in The Rock.  They need to know of His oath, His covenant, His blood, and that He is all their hope and stay.

The Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

So how do we let them know of all of this, regarding Christ?  We obviously do not know all of those who struggle – with wondering where a foundation is for their lives.  But God does.  And we know that it is through our prayers that these may be reached.  We may know some of these people ourselves, and we must also pray for opportunity to share with them.  But prayer to our God Who knows every heart is a key, whether others be known to us or not.

We pray, Lord, that your “unchanging grace” can be applied to their lives through our prayers.  We pray that they know of You the Anchor that is solid rock.  We pray that as they come to know You, they will be clothed in Your righteousness and be worthy to stand faultless before You because You took on the sin of the world, making salvation secure at the moment of faith.

Lord, we ask You to help us claim these basic faith-words for all those who need You so much, within their crises.  We thank You for giving us this beautiful “doctrine” of faith in such a song as this.  May You be all their “hope and stay.”

Topics:  Pray for those who seem to have lost their anchor – that they will know Him and gain salvation and grace, wholly leaning on Jesus’ name.
