I Kings 1:40 Thought/Prayer: Heard Above All. Topics: 2 at end.
“And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.” KJV http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com).
After David’s son Solomon was anointed king all the people rejoiced, piping with pipes. The pipes are not described, but perhaps they were something like a recorder or flute.
Just yesterday evening I attended a patriotic program for the 4th of July. A bagpiper played “Amazing Grace” tuned with choir and orchestra. The choir and orchestra were in full joyous mode, producing big celebratory music. The sanctuary was filled with voice and instrument. Probably nearly a thousand people were blessed by the grand sound.
But what could be heard above the choir and the orchestra? The bagpipe. “Amazing Grace” could be heard distinctly above all the other musical sounds. The bagpipe sounded forth its unique reedy voice, and who doesn’t get goose bumps when bagpipes begin ”Amazing Grace”? We hear the drone begin, and we hope hope hope that the song will be “Amazing Grace.”
I thought how similar this is to God’s voice. His voice comes through no matter the other sounds in our lives. His is a singular voice, and unique. There is no human way to imitate it, just as the bagpipe in its intricacies and levels of sound cannot be imitated by any instrument with a single type of basic sound. The bagpipe has multi-level sounds. God’s voice is His alone, and when it comes to us, it is singular in sound and effect, even though his meaning may have multiple levels to each of us. We can hear it above all.
Lord, help us who work for LIFE to be faithful to listen for your unique voice above the cacophony of sounds of living in our lives. Help us tune our hearts toward your call, above all.
Topics: Pray for willingness to try to intently hear God’s voice in our lives.
