I Peter 5:1-4   Thought/Prayer:  Chief.  Topics:  2 at end.

Instructions to Elders
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that fades not away.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

When we consider Jesus as the Door to salvation, and we think of the gate of a pen for keeping sheep safe, we may want to look at the scripture above wherein Jesus is described as the chief Shepherd.  Of all shepherds everywhere, there is One who is the greatest, the chief.  This is the Shepherd we would surely choose if given a choice.  This is the Shepherd whose watch care is unequaled, whose decisions about grazing and watering and sheep safety are unparalleled; no bad judgment.

If a flock of sheep becomes too large, the shepherd may need to hire others (hirelings) to help out.  But not Jesus the Chief Shepherd.  He keeps track of every sheep with no assistance from others.  We (His sheep) need never fear that a hired helper will care less about us sheep and let us run off and plummet over a cliff.  No, the Chief Shepherd knows ALL because He is Lord of the Universe.

He cares about us even before we become part of His flock.  Romans 5:8: “But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (AKJV).  He wants us to be saved and safe under His watchfulness.  And He shoulders all of the responsibility for this.

But in addition, if there were millions or billions of shepherds over all time, there is still one who is Chief.  If shepherds went through training to be shepherds, Jesus Christ would be the one up front with the microphone giving out all of the job requirements and expectations.

Aren’t we glad that our Shepherd is over all others and carefully watches us and fends off the threats to our well-being?  Thank You, Lord, for being the Chief Shepherd.  But, Lord, help us to introduce others to You, through our prayers, our service, and for many, our pro-LIFE work.  Please, Chief Shepherd, give those at pregnancy crisis centers the right words and the right heart to bring into the flock many confused and frightened moms and dads as they look for help for their lives.  Help them meet the greatest shepherd, You, the Chief.

Topics:  Pray for pregnancy-center workers as they explain salvation to their clients and for the care that comes from Jesus Christ.
