I Samuel 7:10-12 Thought/Prayer: Stones of Ebenezer. Topics: 2 at end.
“And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.” Scripture quotations marked “NASB” are taken from the New American Standard Bible®, Copyright © The Lockman Foundation 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1995. When we celebrate birthdays, sometimes we contemplate. Birthdays are milestones, and we can look back and consider stones set in the past, and then passed by. Markers of the miles walked or driven are helpful when travelling, and they can be helpful in life.
Samuel set down an important marker in the stone named Ebenezer. Whenever you hear of the Ebenezer Stone, think of God’s help and the markers that honor it. Where and what are the markers in your life indicating help from the Lord?
As Christians, we all have some of these. The first major one is always the point at which we came to know Jesus as Savior and Lord. Even if we don’t know the exact time and date of coming to Jesus, we still have that marker indicating the choice we made to claim Him as Savior. He knows when it was! Then all the others along the way are reminders of His working in our lives after we turn our lives over to Him.
We can set markers of age, accomplishment, triumph, and more. But then there are also stones of problems, battles we fight, tragedy. Maybe the stones we set for these are of darker hue. These darker times are real, though, and they are just as much in the structure of our lives as are overcoming and victory.
If we look closely, we may see that after we have lain down a dark stone of challenge, maybe a little bit closer to us as we look back at our life’s path, are some brightening rocks or pebbles. These shine out and remind us that Someone has been there, even when darkness and weariness seemed only to darker our days. God is there. Our Ebenezer comes.
Lord, today we pray for those with unexpected events in life this day, or month or year. If decisions are to be made, Lord, concerning life or death, make Yourself known, You our Ebenezer, our Help. We ask that you display Yourself as Ebenezer to those who need to mark down YOU as the most major milestone in all of their life. And Lord, may the unborn have their true “birth-day,” and may others considering LIFE live out their days each one, as many as You have planned.
Topics: Pray for families in the throes of decisions about LIFE, for their awareness of God’s Rock-solid help in life.
