II Cor. 10:5   Thought/Prayer:  Bolt it In.  Topics:  2 at end.

“. . . overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ; . . .”  DBY (Read this scripture and more at

When we want to run away . . . having bolted this scripture into the skull of our brains will help.  Yes, affix it totally into our heads so that it cannot escape us.  Although it may seem ridiculous to conjure up this action in our minds, this is a good thing.

“How”? you say.

Well, we need this scripture in our heads because it will help us keep our thoughts where they should be:  in our Lord.  If we can remember this scripture as we walk through every day of life, we will have many victories over our thought life, that part of our life that informs the rest of our living so intensely.

This scripture (or any other) can be forcibly installed in our heads by one imperative action:  Force of will.  And this, of course, lies in our being willing to pound scriptures into our brain.  And this, of course, takes a true desire to have God’s word readily available for when we need it and the discipline to work at something most of us resist:  memorization.  To lots of us, to think of memorizing something is mesmerizing, to say the least, if we can’t get the dread of it out of our heads.  We just wish that the scriptures would stick in there as easily as our thoughts of resistance about it all.

But, then, we all know that we have memorized many things in our lives:  our name; our addresses, one by one, where we have lived; our cell-phone numbers, passwords, and on and on.

When it comes to the scriptures, they totally can be memorized.  There are many plans and courses to teach us how to do this.  But we really do not even need these, if we truly set our hearts (as well as our minds) to accomplish this.  Actually, it may come down to the “set” of our heart as well as the attitude of our brains.  There is more than one aspect to scripture: the mental manipulation of verses; and, the heart-attitude toward them.  Perhaps the major reason for memorizing scripture comes first from the heart.

We talk about eye-hand coordination in tasks such as typing or playing the piano.  Maybe the head-heart coordination in the scripture scenario is just as important.  Or more perhaps, considering the value of scripture in our total lives!

Lord, we often resist the hard work, the pounding in, of getting Your Word into our brains for use at any moment.  Help us, Lord, to be able to overcome the initial resistance to scripture memorization that many of us have.  Help each of us to see ourselves as capable in this task. It is so easy to think some folks are just so much better than we are.  Take this negative attitude away for us!  We can do ever so much better in assisting someone in the struggle for LIFE if we can have ready access to Your Word, as friends and counselors.  Every scripture bolted into our heads will lead the way to success after success in You, Lord.

Topics:  Pray for determination to memorize scripture, for great determination.
