II Cor. 5:17 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  That Blank Page.  Topics:  2 at end.

“So that if any one is in Christ, he is a new creature: the old state of things has passed away; a new state of things has come into existence.”  WNT (Read this scripture and more at

When we enter a new year (or when a new year comes to us we might better say), it can have many effects in our thinking and our doings.  This year, I’m comparing it to something from my childhood:  That blank page in the teacher’s hand.

The blank page I’m thinking of is a blank piece of construction paper, maybe 10” x 14”, with absolutely no mark on it.  My teacher was holding it up for the class to see, when we were perhaps a classroom full of 2nd graders.  The paper was an amazing thing.

Well, what could be so amazing about a piece of white paper?  Well, it was this blank-ness, for lack of a better description.  The paper was an invitation to something:  Art.

It seems that the teacher then fastened the paper to the chalkboard in some way.  And there it clung, awaiting its destiny; which was, briefly, to be drawn upon by the marker in our teacher’s hand.  The marker was probably a crayon.  But whatever it was, it did something miraculous when applied to the paper.  We were going to draw robins; each child was to draw a robin red-breast.  And the teacher’s hand drew the outline of a bird’s basic shape on that inviting piece of paper.

I could hardly wait to start on my page.  Draw I did; we all did.  No one could ever call me an artist.  Who would remember how my robin turned out?  But that memory of the paper and the bird will always be with me.  And I think of it here at the beginning of another year that I have been graced to receive.

My year ahead is, of course, a blank page as it often said.  I may write on it, draw on it, color on it, scribble on it, make splotches of black ink like a Rorschach test of personality.  But what I do to my page is up to me.  No one else is allowed to directly paint or draw on my new page.  It’s not that others will not be represented on my page; they will because everyone with whom I have contact will in some way inform my life and make the page slightly altered.

But for direct application, my page is mine.  The only thing I need to do, specifically, is to ask God’s opinion on how I should apply my life’s drawing.  That is how it will be a beautiful thing; when it is patterned by heavenly guidance.

Lord, help us all to use our new life’s pages well, at the beginning of a new year and on through each day.  Help each of our marks be godly, in You, and from Your hand Lord.  And help me be willing to wait to make shapes and lines until we are sure of your hand in things.  Help us to know how to draw for LIFE, each day.

Topics:  Pray for wisdom to use each new day as a gift from God and to draw on it as He directs.
