§ What is Pro-Life Unity?

To achieve Pro-Life Unity we will establish standards that we all agree upon, and efforts that we all regularly participate in. By working together we can challenge the culture of death and the apathy which is pervasive in our society.

II Cor. 8:7-11   Thought/Prayer:  Commitments in a Year.  Topics:  2 at end.

“But as ye abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all earnestness, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.  I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.  For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich.  And herein I give my judgment: for this is expedient for you, who were the first to make a beginning a year ago, not only to do, but also to will.  But now complete the doing also; that as there was the readiness to will, so there may be the completion also out of your ability.”  ASV http://www.bible.com (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)

When assessing from the vantage point of a year being completed, what do we see?  What should we look for as we consider all the many events of any year?  Interestingly, we see a description of this sort of thing right here in the pages of scripture.  Paul is writing to the church at Corinth and reminding them to look back at their year and to complete something they said they would do a year earlier:  to send material support to fellow Christians in Macedonia who needed help.  The Corinthians had said they would do this – but the offering has never been completed.  Paul urges them to complete this.

Is this not the way all of us are, at times, when we look back to a year earlier?  There are always many actions we intended to take but did not.  There are always things we wish we had done – or hadn’t done – in any given year.  Yes, we are human; and God gave us humans the chances to prove ourselves in relationship with others and with Him.  We never could work our way into Heaven – far too holy there, for any of us to gain it through our own efforts.  (Jesus saves.)  But as this scripture tells us, we are to perform good deeds, and we are to look back and assess whether we’ve lived our years well, according to our commitments.

Look back and take stock – and hopefully not have too much shock, we might say.  If we really get serious about this, we will have to admit that most years we probably have forgotten what we said we would do in January, by March at the latest.  But we’re not talking New Year’s resolutions here.  We’re talking completing the tasks we set out to do in the work of the Lord.  In pro-life work, this is no less important than any other commitment, at whatever time of the year.  But for us, it is often the new year that sparks determinations to remember better, to remember to do better.

Lord, we thank you for new beginnings.  And we thank you for scriptures such as this one that show the human condition, one of not completing tasks even though energy and interest were high when a commitment was made.  Help us to constantly update our commitment levels to always complete what we say we will, especially if it is in your service, Lord.

Topics:  Pray for awareness of commitments through the year, and ask the Lord to help us meet them.
