Isaiah 40:11 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer:  What is It with Sheep?  Topics:  2 at end.

Isaiah 40:11 (Pt. 3) “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather together the lambs with his arm, and shall take them up in his bosom, and he himself shall carry them that are with young.”  (DRB)  (Read these scriptures and more at

What is it with sheep in the Bible?  From the Old Testament through the New Testament and completing in the book of Revelation:  Sheep.  Although shepherds were considered in the lowest strata of society, God uses them and their sheep in significant ways, indeed the most significant way:  Jesus Christ is the Great Shepherd.

In the Old Testament, Abraham was a shepherd to the “enth” degree:  wealthy with his flocks and herds.  David was the shepherd king, brought from the flocks he tended to be anointed King of Israel.  He wrote the 23rd Psalm: “The Lord is My Shepherd.”  Jesus could very well have had sheep nearby when he was born in a stable.  Jesus, in the New Testament, declares Himself a shepherd, and His sheep know His voice.  We who believe are His sheep.  He describes how a shepherd will go looking for the one little lost sheep, out on the barren hillside somewhere.

In Revelation, we have a portrait of Jesus as the Lamb Who was Slain.  Webster’s Bible Translation puts it grandly this way:
“The Lamb Exalted
And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and the living beings, and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.”

And the Earth should say “amen” to that.

How amazing that our God takes something as seemingly insignificant as a sheep and incorporates it into His plan for the salvation of the universe.  I Corinthians 3:19 tells us (Weymouth New Testament), “This world’s wisdom is ‘foolishness’ in God’s sight; for it is written, ‘He snares the wise with their own cunning.’”  You see, God Who sees us as His sheep, knew all along that His wisdom for the world would override any societal attitudes toward sheep.  The Lamb of God:  Slain, yet eternal.

Surely we who stand for created LIFE must view with compassion the preborn who are also God’s little lambs to be carried by Him in their lives on Earth.  He welcomes each one on Earth because He created them.  Their parents also are dear to Him, and He wants to be known by them, especially as Savior.  Lord, we ask that we in pro–life work can allow You to be so compassionate in our hearts that we will see babies and children as so dear to You . . . and then Lord, make them dear to us also.

We are honored to be able to serve by carrying them when needed, these sheep of Yours.

Topics:  Pray for pregnant moms who are in distress over their pregnancy, that they will know the Great Shepherd and His care.
