Job 33:3 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Hannah’s Truth.  Topics:  2 at end.

“My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart: and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.”  ERV (Read these scriptures and more at
I Samuel l:9-13   “Hannah Prays for a Son
So Hannah rose after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drank. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.  And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly.  And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give to thy handmaid a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli observed her mouth. Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.”  WBT (Read these scriptures and more at

Sincere speaking.  What’s it all about?  Can anything but the truth be spoken in sincerity?  In there are sincere lie?  Nope.  Not really.  Someone might be able to be sincere in affect and to “sort of” believe that what is said is true, but it cannot be.  Something is either true or it is not.  We even talk of half-truths.  They are lies.  In courts of law people swear to tell the truth and the whole truth and nothing but it.  (It seems that those in pursuit of truth in law understood the human penchant for telling less than the truth or even just a bit of it.)

Hannah needed no oath for truth; and her truth was that she wanted a baby.  She was being very truthful with God in her need.  Women in her day were looked down upon if children did not come into the family.  Women were supposed to bear children, probably for many reasons including economic.  Children would provide labor on the farm or in a shop or such.

Hannah had one thing on her mind the day she stood in the temple to pray only to be thought drunk.  She asked God for a remedy for barrenness, the remedy being a child.  Her prayer was full of the truth in her heart.  She spoke it to God without being heard aloud by herself or others.  But God didn’t even have to read lips to know of the intense truth in her prayer:  He heard her heart, something besides the beating of it.  He heard her heart’s voice.

Lord, we want You to hear our hearts’ voices when we call out to you.  Like Hannah, help us to speak only the sincere words from our hearts, words You hear even though not spoken to human ears.  Help us to cry out to you with our truthful wants and needs and to know You hear us and to look forward to answers, just as Hannah and Elkanah looked forward to the birth of Samuel their son.  Help others to be as honest with you in their desire for a child that will be born into the world.  We know that their lives will not be terminated early of unnatural causes while still in the womb.

Topics:  Pray for truth in prayer.  We want truth in all aspects of our lives, but pray for God’s leading into truthful petitions from Him.
