John 16:21 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Joy?  Topics:  2 at end.

“A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.”  (WEB)  Read this scripture and more at

This scripture is included in the book of John as a way that Jesus pointed His disciples to the future, the future containing the greatest of all events in history, His resurrection from the dead.  Here John is tells us that Jesus is comparing the sorrow that the disciples will know after the crucifixion, to the anguish and sorrow that a woman feels during childbirth.  Jesus tells his disciples that after the pain and anguish experienced in losing Him to death, there will be incredible joy because they will see Him again.  He beats death!  He comes and fellowships with them in His risen body.

We could pray that when a mother is downcast and anguished because of a pregnancy she has not planned or wanted, that she be revived in spirit by the thought of the child that is coming.  But any thought of the child may just crush her spirit more.  Maybe the child is from rape; the expenses of this child cannot be afforded; the father has fled the scene and she is all alone with this expanding belly she can only view as a burden.

For those who know such a woman, please pray that the joy of a coming new life will overshadow the burdens accompanying the unwanted pregnancy.  Perhaps you could claim this scripture, John 16:21, that there will be joy eventually, after the child comes into the world.

For those of us who do not know a woman going through such a time, let us still pray that joy will reign for all women in such circumstances – God knows them – and that the outlook will improve for them and their surrounding family and friends.  It is the task of Christians to uphold LIFE for these women, to pray that God will bless in spite of circumstance.

God knows all of these children are on the way!  He created each little boy or girl.  There is a plan for the lives of these unexpected children.  Pray for joy to come sooner rather than later.

Lord, help us to pray for mothers in this situation, that joy will supersede all of the anguish of an unplanned pregnancy/problematic or even criminally-wrought conception.
