John 16:33 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer:  Places of Good and Light.  Topics:  2 at end.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”  (AKJV)  Read this scripture and more at

St. Paul’s Chapel on Wall Street in New York City:  Maintaining an incredible history.  According to online information, this chapel has stood there since 1766 – built 10 years before the Declaration of Independence!  It turned 250 in 2016.  What’s more, George Washington prayed there after he took the Presidential oath of office.

In the spiritual regard, the chapel has certainly been a small place for good among all the places in the world . . . a place of worship and prayer.  It is an amazingly long-lived structure.

It took on a special type of a “place of good” when it became a haven for rescue-and-recovery workers after the 09-11-01 attack on America.  It is also amazing that during the 9-1-1 attack, only one window pane was broken.  Alongside all the tragedy that evil can bring, this one small plot of real estate stood ready to receive the hurting and the confused and the exhausted.  Who but God could have arranged this?

Of course we ask “Why” regarding such a blast of evil in our world on that infamous day.  Of course we wonder; we want to go against; we want to make the world only a place for good.  But we live in a fallen world where ghastly evil has its presence.  But in spite of it, there are rays of light, such as surely has streamed upward from the St. Paul’s Chapel site.  In many ways, the light from this place, although unseen, would match that of the lights skyward, from the 9-1-1 site from March, 2012 and after.

Even those who do not, will not, or can not let themselves believe in God would surely credit such a place as St. Paul’s as having a presence for good.  And to bring this down to our daily level of living, light does proceed from dark places made light . . . whether it be directly from the Lord Jesus Christ . . . or indirectly through the good-will efforts of those who “help.”

As we think of the light from St. Paul’s Chapel, spiritually and through good will, can we not also picture places we know where love and light prevail within acts of service?  One of the United States’ Presidents, George H. W. Bush, created the phrase “a thousand points of light,” to encourage volunteerism.  Perhaps each point sends light up toward Heaven, as people around the world help others willingly and without a cent of monetary pay.

Lord, on our level, even as we become discouraged with the state of the world, let us remember St. Paul’s Chapel, preserved for service and light for a special time.  Help us, as we stand outside an abortion place or as we march for LIFE or as we give, or pray, for LIFE.  Help us to believe we are lights for You, the source of all Light.
