Judges 7:5-9 Thought/Prayer: Where the Provisions Ended Up. Topics: 2 at end.
“And he brought down the people to the water; and Jehovah said to Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down on his knees to drink. And the number of them that lapped, with their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men; and all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water. And Jehovah said to Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and give Midian into thy hand; and let all the people go every man to his place. And they took the victuals of the people in their hand, and their trumpets; and all the men of Israel he sent away, every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. And it came to pass in that night, that Jehovah said to him, Arise, go down to the camp; for I have given it into thy hand.” DARBY (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)
One small note here. Gideon has just been told by God which of the men of his army will take on the Midianites, a mere 300 men. The rest of the would-be army men were sent home. But this text indicates that the 300 men received the food of those who left, of those not proving worthy by God to show His power by gaining a victory with so few men. It seems here that those who were chosen received extra provisions – provisions given originally to those who were made to leave. This could enhance their abilities of the 300, knowing that they probably would not run out of food supplies.
Sometimes God’s plans for us seem quite unusual or entirely unbelievable, but He always has a great plan going. It is hard to imagine how those three hundred men felt, knowing that they, so few, were going up against a greater, stronger army. The Midianites had ruled harshly over the Israelites for seven years.
God’s plan here was to show His power by fielding a diminished-looking army against the Midianites’ strong hand. But He had a special plan for provisions for this small army. Extras! God often surprises us even in the midst of events seemingly beyond our understanding.
How does this happen in our daily lives? We know that we are standing forth against the power of evil every day. We who stand for LIFE realize that sometimes our numbers seem small; but our provisions are always enough. We go against those who do not understand life given by a Creator. We go against those who think that human beings answer to no higher power. We go against tides of opinion.
Believe for provision. This Bible event shows us that God’s plans are full and inclusive of what we need. No matter how small we feel, Believe for provision. Believe for it in the face of great odds.
Lord, help us not to doubt that You have provided for us in this battle for LIFE. We not only will accept the provisions you send our way; we will know that they are enough, even extra. When we go on the premise that You do provide, then we gain the extra strength to fight because you have surprised us with Your good hand in providing.
