Luke 1:76 – 80   Thought/Prayer:  Zacharias’ Song for John.  Topics:  2 at end.

“And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Highest: for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high has visited us,
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing to Israel.” (AKJV)  (Read these scriptures and more at

Here, in the gospel of Luke, we have the praise song of Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist.  The child John’s birth was prophesied directly to Zacharias by an angel and was an extra blessing from God because Zacharias and his wife Elisabeth had been unable to have children, and they were old.

But John was born, and he was named according to the name given Zacharias by the angel.  These verses were the last 1/3 of the song the grateful and blessed Zacharias offered up to God.  He speaks of the course John will take in life on Earth.  He was to proclaim the coming of the Lord Jesus (his cousin through Mary’s lineage – John’s mother was a cousin to Mary); he was to preach the need for remission of sin.

On Earth today, we don’t really hear of announcing angels foretelling the birth of a baby.  We don’t ordinarily (although not impossibly) hear of someone’s mission from God being proclaimed on the day of birth.

But we do know that God has a plan; and maybe we can be pretty certain that in the heavenly realm, there is a rejoicing that a new life on Earth has been conceived.  Even though no child in the womb today is the direct cousin of the Messiah, God in His all-knowing character plans the earthly cousins and parents and grandparents of each child conceived.  God even records where they are born.  (Psalm 87.)

Lord, thank You for this song of Zacharias’ that You gave us as a praise.  Thank You for each preborn baby this day.  Help their parents to love them and want them to be born into the world.  We ask that You help us to strongly stand for those preborn in the world right now.  Upon their births, perhaps, Lord, songs will be sung.

Topics:  Pray for steadfastness to hold up the preborn in prayer, that songs might be sung at their births.
