Luke 2:1-14 (Pt. 4)  Thought/Prayer:  “The Birthday of a King.”  Topics:  2 at end.

The Birth of Jesus
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Shepherds and Angels
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, see, the angel of the Lord came on them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said to them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

When considering older songs in public domain at Christmas, there is one that has been popular in the past and is still loved by many:  “The Birthday of a King.”  (William Harold Neidlinger, ([1890 or 1918])

In the little village of Bethlehem,
There lay a child one day,
And the sky was bright with a holy light,
O’er the place where Jesus lay:

O how the angels sang,
Alleluia! how it rang;
And the sky was bright with a holy light,
‘Twas the birthday of a King.

‘Twas a humble birth-place,
But oh! how much God gave us that day,
From the manger bed, what a path has led
What a perfect holy way:

O how the angels sang,
Alleluia! how it rang;
And the sky was bright with a holy light,
‘Twas the birthday of a King.

It has simple lyrics, but then the birth of King Jesus was simple – not in a fancy palace with finery and gold and silver . . . but in a humble, simple stable where animals lived.  This little song simply tells us that the birth was holy; there was a bright light – from stars, or “the” star (of Bethlehem); from angels; from the baby’s beautiful face.  Whatever kind of light is being described here, it was real.  And it was holy, as God came to Earth as a human . . . yet totally God.  Praise Him!

The second verse describes this birth as the way God gave us a “perfect holy way.”  It is the perfect way.  It’s the perfect way for us very imperfect humans to know God in all His pure perfection.  It’s the perfect way for Him to be able to communicate with us even though we are evil in our sin and He cannot have anything to do with evil (Habbakuk 1:13).

The chorus has us hearing angels singing with gusto, ringing their song through the night and through our existence and on into eternity.  Oh how the angels sang!  We can only imagine the clarity and purity of their celestial voices.

Thank you, Lord, for this song that brings to light how they sang . . . and why . . . For the birthday of a King!  Help us to spread the word of the importance of every unborn baby around the world, that they may live to be born – and bring the light of their smiles to families and friends.
