§ What is Pro-Life Unity?

To achieve Pro-Life Unity we will establish standards that we all agree upon, and efforts that we all regularly participate in. By working together we can challenge the culture of death and the apathy which is pervasive in our society.

Luke 2:25-38 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer:  A Small Group.  Topics:  2 at end.

“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  And it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.  And he came by the spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,  Then he took him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken concerning him. And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (And a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about eighty four years, who departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant, gave thanks likewise to the Lord, and spoke of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”  WBT (Read this scripture and more at

We can see that we have represented in this scripture:  a young woman and an elderly one, a younger man and an elderly one, marriage, widowhood, and a hopeful man looking for Christ, all within the five individuals gathered and looking at the baby Jesus.  But there is at least one more representation here that we will not overlook:  God.  God in more ways than one.
First, of course, we have the baby Jesus Christ Who is God Himself.  We see him in his most vulnerable form, unable to care for himself in His form of physical flesh, his having taken on the entire form of a human being.

But we also see God in Anna and in Simeon, as they fulfill their appointed destinies from God:  in Simeon’s faithful belief that he would see God before he would die; in Anna’s proclamation to others who would seek Him, having recognized Him immediately.  This had to be of God because there would be no earthly way that she could have known that any baby would be the Savior.
And, of course, God was directly involved in the life of Joseph who would fulfill the earthly role of Jesus’ father; and in Mary’s life, of course, as she was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and conceived miraculously the Savior.  Yes, here is a group of people, long ago, living in separateness until they all come together in the Temple when the baby Jesus was just weeks old.  This was a perfectly orchestrated plan by God the Father, in introducing His son to folks in several different stances or circumstances of life.
God’s being there is the most important thing, of course.  In some ways, He was always there since He predicted the Savior to Anna and to Simeon; and He was there in Jesus’ conception and had personal contact with Mary (first at the annunciation) and with Joseph (when God told him to take Mary as His wife).  Yes, this little group was common (common folks) unique (from God) and holy (because of the Savior’s presence and God’s plan being played out).

Lord, we thank You so much for including in Your Word this little scene with its big message.  It just brings You, Lord, closer to our hearts to think of how this happened and its significance.  Help us, Lord, to appreciate Your willingness to bring Your Self down to our level to let us know you love us.  Thank you.

Topics:  Praise God for how He is willing to portray common folks in His Word . . . pray for this to impact our hearts to move toward Jesus always.
