Luke 2:7   Thought/Prayer:  “Hush, Hush”.  Topics:  2 at end.

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”  (AKJV)  Read this scripture and more at

An old French carol in public domain (later translated into English) tells a winsome story regarding a little girl being called to Jesus’ manger to see the new baby.  Her name is Jeanette Isabella, and her story-in-song has been sung since 1533!

Here are the lyrics that tell her story.  Enjoy the read.

Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella!
Bring a torch, To the cradle run.
It is Jesus, good folk of the village;
Christ is born, and Mary calls us.
Ah, ah,
Beautiful is the Mother;
Ah, ah, beautiful is the Son!

Cloudless is the sky above us.
Leave your bed – and quietly come.
Come, and you will see the Small One,
Like a star, His face is shining.
Go, go,
Put on your finest garments;
Go, go – Bring your finest gifts.

Wrong it is when the Child is sleeping,
Wrong to make the slightest sound.
Come you, one and all to adore Him,
But, be still – Adore in silence.
Hush, hush,
Him we must not waken,
Hush, hush – Holy is His sleep.

Gently come to the humble stable,
Pause beside His holy bed.
See how beautiful is Jesus,
Like a rose, so pure, so lovely.
Hush, hush,
Sweet is the sleep of Jesus,
Hush, hush – Holy is His rest.

Our prayer for today is that this humble approach to the Baby Jesus’ manger can be appreciated by anyone struggling with an unplanned pregnancy, whatever the reason it has occurred.  To someone reading this in any such family, perhaps it is meant for you.  To read of the care that is desired for the new baby; to think of the care that the growing preborn baby will need; to ponder this in the light of the value of created human life:  the prayer for you will be to realize the worth of the Christ Child Who came in human form to us, to be the example of the worth of one child, one baby.

All babies need the careful concern of the one directing the girl Jeannette Isabella to get up out of bed and go to the stable.  It is not said who calls her.  We might think, a parent.  But maybe God calls her to the manger.  He calls all of us.

Lord, thank You for coming as a baby, totally helpless and in need of tender care.  Please speak to unwed mothers-to-be and impress up their hearts the value of this manger-Baby.  And of theirs.  “Hush, Hush.”

Topics:  Pray for those in dire circumstances because of an unwanted pregnancy, for their hearts to be moved to love the child.
