Luke 2: 1-7 Thought/Prayer: A Humble Birthplace. Topics: 2 at end.
“Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth. She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (WEB ) Read these scriptures and more at http://prayerpivot.com.)
Here are the lyrics to a Christmas song “The Birthday of a King,” written in 1890 (and now in public domain) by William Harold Neidlinger. The melody has a certain ascending lilt to it, and the lyrics speak to the humble birthplace of the Savior.
“In the little village of Bethlehem
There lay a child one day
And the sky was bright
With a holy light
O’er the place where Jesus lay.
Alleluia
O how the angels sang!
Alleluia
How it rang!
And the sky was bright
With a holy light
‘Twas the birthday of a King.
Humble birthplace
But O
How much God gave to us that day!
From the manger bed what a path has led
What a perfect holy way.
Alleluia
O how the angels sang!
Alleluia
How it rang!
And the sky was bright
With a Holy light
‘Twas the birthday of a King.”
As we look forward to the celebration of the Savior’s birth (Christmas, of course), may we ponder the extreme difference between His place of birth and His rightful place in all of time and before: At the right hand of God in Heaven (Ephesians 1:20). And may we also consider the place of the unexpected baby in mother’s womb, on Earth today, as having potential to be more than just a baby, but a person living on Earth (parents having chosen to bring this unexpected one to birth) with the potential to do great things for God, at the right time and when the right choice is made – to believe in Jesus Christ.
Just as the humble baby in Bethlehem’s crib was more than just a poor child, the children who have been chosen to live on Earth . . . because of LIFE-decisions of their parents . . . have God’s potential with them. No, they do not have the potential of the One and Only Savior. But God has given them His own unique potential for His work on Earth, once they believe.
Lord, help us to pray for all of these unexpected children and their families, that they may live, no matter how humble their beginnings, to serve the Savior who was humbly birthed but raised to be King of all.
