Matthew 1:18-21 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Joseph, A Kind-hearted Man.  Topics:  2 at end.

“The circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ were these. After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united in marriage, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. But Joseph her husband, being a kind-hearted man and unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal. But while he was contemplating this step, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to bring home your wife Mary, for she is with child through the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to call His name JESUS for He it is who will save His People from their sins.”  (WEY)  (Read these scriptures and more at

We are told that the earthly father of Jesus, Joseph, was a kind-hearted man.  This manifests itself in his attitude toward his betrothed, Mary, when he learns that she is pregnant before they are married.  Of course, she carries the Savior, but Joseph didn’t know this at that time.

But because Joseph was kind-hearted, he wanted to do the best for Mary.  So he made the decision to divorce her (release her) quietly without calling attention to her plight.  Consequences for an illegitimate pregnancy were severe, including being stoned to death.  God placed love for Mary in the heart of Joseph because Mary’s betrothal was probably decided by the family and not by Mary.  If God had not given Joseph a heart of love, it would have been a much more difficult scenario for the young, pregnant Mary.

Can a heart of love make a difference in decisions today by men who have fathered a child out of wedlock?  (No, we’re not equating these men to Joseph!  These men fathered these children – There was only one God-conception and only one Joseph who took over the role of father to God’s son.)  But in thinking about it, yes, a heart of love could make a difference.  We do know that too often there is no real love between a man and women who create a child when not married.  Affairs often are based primarily on the physical and an attraction between souls.

But when there is love, it may be the heart of the father that takes the lead, although options may be few.  If there is love and neither partner is married, a man with a heart of love will ask the girl to marry him.  But if one of the parties is married, then what?  It’s a terrible problem.  But the child on the way needs to be born.

If the man does want to do right by the baby’s mother, hopefully he would encourage her to carry the baby and offer what support he can.  The agreement might be that she will carry the baby and put the child up for adoption.  Or maybe a family member will take the child.

But when there are no good options, it may be the father’s heart that carries the day and carries the girl through.  Lord, we pray for the babies that innocently find themselves, preborn, in this type of situation.  We pray, Lord, that You will speak to fathers of these babies – We ask that you will give them love for the mother and child.  If love is there, then the options may become more plentiful.

Topics:  Pray for fathers who do not intend to be fathers – that they may have a good heart for the baby’s mother and for the baby.
