Matthew 1:18-21 (Pt. 5) Thought/Prayer: Joseph:  Included in Naming the Baby. Topics:  2 at end.

“The circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ were these. After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united in marriage, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. But Joseph her husband, being a kind-hearted man and unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal. But while he was contemplating this step, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to bring home your wife Mary, for she is with child through the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to call His name JESUS for He it is who will save His People from their sins.”  (WEY)  (Read these scriptures and more at

As to the importance of fathers, consider this about Joseph.  Even though Joseph was not the earthly father of Jesus, God lets him in on the name He will be given.  When the angel came to Mary to tell her that she would be carrying the Son of God, the angel told Mary that her baby’s name would be Jesus.  When the angel came to assure Joseph that it was in God’s plan for him to take Mary home as his wife, in the face of great criticism by others regarding Mary’s status as a yet-to-be-married mother, the angel also told Joseph what the child would be named.  Jesus.  We do not know if Mary had told Joseph of the name.  But even if she had, the angel verified it to Joseph.  His name would be   Jesus, meaning Savior – and the angel tells Joseph that Jesus will save His people from their sins.  We are not told if Mary was also told that her son would save His people, but she may have already known that the name Jesus meant Savior.

Of course, it would be interesting to know the conversations between Mary and Joseph over all of this.  But God in His wisdom leaves it all out.  Conversations between husband and wife over these types of situations are only for their ears.  It’s privileged.  Plays and movies may put words into the mouths of the characters of Mary and Joseph; but we do not know what actually was said between them.  There were probably very serious conversations – but also some of the greatest joy experienced by prospective parents.  God’s son would grow up I their home!

Today both parents usually are involved in the choosing of names for children – sometimes with considerations lasting across the nine months of pregnancy.  There were no such discussions in Jesus’ case.  He would be named Jesus.  Joseph may have greatly enjoyed telling Mary that the angel had included him about the name of the baby.

Since this is an anti-abortion prayer site, of course we will connect these thoughts to pro-LIFE happenings in some way.  It’s this.  There are many baby boys (and girls) in utero at this very moment, waiting to be born and to be given a name.  If their lives are cut short in the womb, they will never be given a name to call their own during their life on Earth; there will be no life on Earth for them.  For some of the daddies of these preborn children, this will not seem to matter.  They did not want to baby anyway, particularly if the circumstances of the conception were immoral.  But there are daddies who will feel terrible that they will never get to name their baby girl or boy because “mom” decided to go against the dads who desired to bring up the children they had fathered.

Lord, be with the men who father unplanned children.  Let them be considered in the plans for their preborn children, that they may be father to them after they are born into our world of Earth.

Topics:  Pray for the fathers of babies they did not plan to conceive.  Help them to see the preborn little ones as having vital lives to be lived out after they are born.
