Matthew 17:1,2 Thought/Prayer: White as Light. Topics: 2 at end.
“And after six days Jesus takes with [him] Peter, and James, and John his brother, and brings them up into a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them. And his face shone as the sun, and his garments became white as the light; . . .” KJV (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)
Have you ever prayed for someone that the Lord will dazzle the person with His brilliance? I have. Sometimes it seems that the only way for a person to take notice of Jesus Christ is to be “dazzled” by Him. At least, perhaps that is a possibility for some who have not yet come to know Him as Savior. The apostle Paul was shown a great light when the risen Christ spoke to him (Acts 9). Christ spoke to him out of the light. Paul became temporarily blind. We might say that the Lord really got Paul’s attention.
When Peter, James and John are taken up on a mountain with Jesus, Jesus becomes transfigured, His appearance changing into one never before known on Earth. He is dazzling! Face shining as the sun. Garments white as light. Imagine it. Which is what we must do – we must imagine because we have never seen such a light – or at least most of us have not. That is not to say that our Lord never has presented Himself in this way to any other. He may have.
But to the three apostles with Jesus that day, Christ’s appearance was the brightest and purest possible. We know this because there is no way Christ can present Himself to someone without being pure – and this scripture tells us He was bright!
Maybe if we at times can think of this transfiguration of our Lord, from his human form seen on Earth to this radiant heavenly type of appearance – but still on Earth – we can enjoy a tiny glimpse of what might lie ahead in Heaven. Of course we don’t know this as certain. But what if Heaven has aspects to it of brilliance and radiance? Oh, how beautiful that would be!
Sometimes our daily work seems greatly less than lustrous. There seems to be very little light on our day. But Christ, still, is our Light. And when we think of how He appeared on that mountain, seen by men right here on Earth, maybe we can have a bit of a lift in our spirits. And maybe we can pass that on to someone struggling with weighty decisions such as how to afford the unplanned child that is on the way. Maybe a light in our eyes, reflected from thoughts of the transfigured Christ, can bring a light to the eyes of others.
Topics: Pray for reminders of the beauty of Our Lord – and then pass that beauty on to others, praying that they may also see the Light of Jesus.
