Matthew 21:12-17 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer:  House of Prayer:  And Children.  Topics:  2 at end.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple
“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said to them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased, And said to him, Hear you what these say? And Jesus said to them, Yes; have you never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings you have perfected praise? And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.”  AKJV (Read these scriptures and more at

Jesus champions the Jewish Temple as a house of prayer.  This is a huge reality, of course . . . prayer in the Temple.  It was a part of the rituals that were carried out by the priests.  It was a cornerstone of the Israelites’ faith in God.  God told them to call unto Him, and they did.

Then Jesus champions children.  Some might say that children are the least significant persons around, being that they have not yet grown up to become productive citizens.  They can be strong-willed, loud, cranky, messy, and on and on.  But here it seems that it was their loud crying- out of praise to Jesus that became the great irritant to the leaders who had not come to believe that Jesus was Who He said He was.  But the children would champion Jesus just as He championed them always.

In a way, it was a matter of truth.  Jesus is the Truth.  And His healing the lame and the blind in the temple was a manifestation of this.  And in some way the children recognized it.  Well, “Out of the mouth of babes . . . “ as we often say.  As this scripture says!  Children sometimes can have an almost uncanny recognition of things as they are, assessing people for what they are.  Here they are surely seeing Jesus as wonderful, as He healed those who needed it so much.  The children were simply responding as children do, when they see something true and good.  The leaders just didn’t understand it.

The lofty temple as a house of prayer:  The small children as affirmation of Jesus.  A contrast.  But God loves to use contrast in scripture.  It catches our attention!

Lord, help us to understand the importance of children and to pass this concept on to hurting families, struggling with decisions, especially about unexpected babies.  Help us to with kindness direct them to scripture that champions children and the praise they bring to God.

Topics:  Pray that families with children will teach them to praise God; and pray for families of unexpected children to understand that the children they bring into the world will praise God naturally.
