Matthew 23:37 Thought/Prayer:  And You Woud Not.  Topics:  2 at end.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [the city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)  (Read this scripture and more at

We know that some mother birds, on their underneath side, have an incubation patch, the area with fewer feathers and more blood vessels.  It is used to help fertilized eggs stay warm during incubation, as the mother nestles herself over her eggs, keeping them tight against the patch.  We know that mother-bird also rotates her eggs in order to keep the temperature even.  And after her little ones are hatched, this mother will still keep her brood close and will scurry them under her wings to safety, should harm threaten.

Jesus likens Himself to a mother bird wanting to protect her young.  He wanted to gather Jerusalem under his wings.  He wanted to provide everything the residents of Jerusalem needed, personally and up close.

But the sad comment at the end of his words is revealing:  “Ye would not.”  Sad words indeed.  But are all of these words just for Jerusalem?  I think not.

When Christmas comes, we think much about birth, the Baby Jesus, and the Baby Jesus’ ultimate mission to save the world, to save us, from ourselves and eternal suffering.  But how many times do we “would not.”  How often has our Lord wanted to draw us close, comfort us and protect us, but we were willful and cold and stubborn?  Too often I’m sure.

Is there someone today who needs to have the touch of Jesus, from us as His representatives?  Who in our lives could compare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem whom Jesus loved so much.  He loved them so much, He even spoke of it in tender words.  Do we need to be swept under Jesus’ wings to experience his warmth and love, and then do we need to find someone who never has known of this?  But if we “would not” let Him draw us close, how can we explain Him to someone else?

Lord, help us to change “and you would not” to “and you would.”  Help us to not resist you as you bring us close.  And then help us to share our experience of You and your closeness with others.  And who better than a young girl terrified by the life growing within her?  Lord, help us to know You better in order to bring life to all young women in crisis wherever we find them, and their families.  Help us to be people who “would,” who will.

Topics:  Ask God to help us let Him draw us closer and ever closer every day in order that we can then serve others better because of our intimate protection from You.
