Matthew 5:14-16   Thought/Prayer:  “Jack,” Dignified.  Topics:  2 at end.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

Don’t care much for the goings-on with Halloween?  Many do not, and sometime Christians will choose not to decorate for this special day.  But school kids may enjoy a costume parade at school, morphing into movie characters; cardboard-box robots; great pumpkins swallowing up the size of a kindergartener.

Teachers join the parade.  How fun to see your teacher’s face now encircled by Raggedy Ann hair or another teacher wielding a Star Wars lightsaber.  Swish swish back and forth.

Halloween (the word is a contraction of All Hallows [or All Saints] Evening) the eve of All Saints Day.  Christian families may wish to lessen the impact of story-told goblins, spooks, hair-raised-back-arched black cats or mean-countenanced jack-o’-lanterns.  Well, there is one small way to do this:  Shine out the light of Jesus!

Yes, instead of making your jack-o’-lantern totally a snaggle-toothed old meany, turn at least one side of him into a truly light-shining testimony.  How?  Well, cut a cross and/or a fish (the sign of the believer from New-Testament times on).  The candle in the pumpkin can shine through any shape.  Why not Christian symbols?

From experience, this works well.  Maybe there actually is no “jack-o’” on either side of your pumpkin.  One side is a cross; the other a fish.  Do away with Jack and make a totally testimonied Christian pumpkin.

And, of course, in keeping with the above scripture, “Jack” will not go under a bushel basket (can be unsafe for fire) but on a doorstep or porch.  Jack will be dignified and placed center-front for the visitors to see, on Halloween.

So, to connect this with our pro-LIFE site here, why not shine out the light of Christ to families in LIFE stresses, way beyond a pumpkin cut-out?  I guess, in a bit of “light” imagery here, we could say that we can be those pumpkin folks who go around shining a cross or a fish-symbol, day by day.

Lord, thank You for the light You give us to shine out, on October 31st, or any day, any year.

Topics:  Pray for our Christian witness to shine “out there” constantly, especially toward families with huge LIFE issues.
