Proverbs 11:2 (Pt. 3)  Thought/Prayer: Wisdom and Humility? Topics:  2 at end.

“When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.”  (WEB)  Read this scripture and more at

Concerning this passage, we may once again ask a question – about the pairing of humility and wisdom.  In our world, do we not often think of wisdom in connection with intellect or accomplishment?  The wisdom of the ages, we might say.  Or we might think of those in the world’s history who made a huge difference, and we consider them wise.  Some of these might include Plato, Confucius, Socrates, Mahatma Ghandi or Nelson Mandela’s philosophy of everyday life.  Yes, intellect and wisdom.  We know these gentlemen were smart and wise.  But, humility and wisdom?

Of course, time proves the classic effect of a life that speaks to generation after generation.  And unless someone is well-read regarding these particular persons’ outlook on life regarding humility, we don’t know it.  But perhaps in our own lives we can make the humble/wise connection.  Proverbs 16:18:  “Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”  Ouch.  This is particularly unwanted with the “fall” is in front of a lot of folks!

But when we consider Christians, is it sometimes the person whom we see out in front doing this . . . doing that . . . that we admire?  But sometimes we find them a bit “too much” personally, as they work among us . . . perhaps we find them seeming to be rather proud about it all?  (We say “seeming” because having a big personality does not mean a person is not humble.  What are they like in their prayer time, we might ask? . . . perhaps the personification of humility as they seek God within, for their tasks?)

That is the key for us all.  No matter the personality or skills with which God has imbued us, wisdom from God can have its humbling effect.  Only when we allow God to have His effect in us and in our work, will we be truly wise.  And hopefully, along with this wisdom . . . because we we realize it is not only our own . . . we will find humility.

Lord, let us rely on You so much that humility before You and others will become our nature, no matter our accomplishments.  Imbue us with Your wisdom above all.  Help us not want to be known for intellect, but humility.

Topics:  Humbly ask for humility from God in our work, including work for created LIFE.
