Ps. 127:3-5 (Pt. 2) Thought/Prayer: Children in the Gates. Topics:  2 at end.

“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.  As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.  Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” KJV (Read this scripture and more at

This could be considered a very unusual scripture.  Shall we see why?

First, children are lauded as both the Lord’s heritage and as a reward from Him.  Then we’re told they are like arrows in a quiver.  This is an unusual comparison, and we probably should think of the importance of arrows in a day when there were no guns or hand grenades.

But then this goes on to say that these children-arrows will not be ashamed, and that they will speak “with the enemies in the gate.”  This designation is no small thing.  At the time the Psalms were being composed, the gate to a city was an important place.  Here would sit the leaders of the city to ponder the day or life, government and more.  Important officials would be there making legal decisions.  It was an honor to sit in the gate and to observe the life of the city.

Here children are shown as growing up to be responsible citizens, even leaders.  In just this one scripture, God commends the birth of children and then pictures them in their futures, being unashamed and successful.  Lord, how can we kill the future of our cities like we have allowed?  Lord, please forgive us for doing away with millions of future leaders, some of whom would have distinguished themselves in life and would have possibly represented You in city gates.

Topics:  Pray for children, future leaders, to be allowed to come into our world and to excel according to the plans God has for each of them.
