Psalm 37:39,40.  Thought/Prayer:  Help and Deliverance.  Topics:  2 at end.

“But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.
And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

If believers never got themselves into trouble, we wouldn’t need scriptures such as this, would we?  The words definitely speak of the trouble in which we may find ourselves, either of our own doing, or not.  When this Psalm was written, hundreds and hundreds of years ago, the “righteous” were those who followed God and wanted to do His will.  It was before the time of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, but still, God honored those who believed in Him and strived to live within His will.

The Jewish people followed the law that had been given to Moses directly from God.  And even so many years ago, we are told right here that the LORD is salvation.  It was just different way back then, God dealing with the Israelites but yet looking forward to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus the Christ.

So, this Psalm tells us that for those who believe, God is our strength in trouble.  And, yes, trouble does come to believer and unbeliever alike.  (God doesn’t want people to say they believe just because it would mean they would never have trouble.  No, He wants our hearts to love Him, in or out of trouble.)

He is our strength “in the time of trouble.”  And through His mighty strength, He will help and deliver.  Our problems may have us feeling that we are a little lamb caught in a thicket, far away from the safe fold where sheep may rest.  It may seem that briars are preventing escape.  But this is where the Good Shepherd comes along, having found us, and lifts us up and out and onto His broad shoulders.  The Good Shepherd, is, of course Jesus Christ.

“I am the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his very life for the sheep.”  John 10:11 (WEY)

“What do you think? If a man has one hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine, go to the mountains, and seek that which has gone astray?”  Matthew 18:12 (WEB)

Yes, we can trust the LORD to be strong for us when we are in trouble.  We can trust Him to come looking for us as His little lost lambs.  A fearful young woman who finds herself pregnant when it is not convenient, nor right, may feel she is fettered by thorns and brambles with nowhere to escape.  But through the efforts of those who stand for LIFE, there is hope for her.

Lord, lead us to pray for those who find themselves so caught.  Help us to lift them up to You so that You may rescue and save.

Topics:  Pray for those believers who need to escape from the brambles of their situation.  Pray the same for unbelievers –and also that they will come to be found by the Lord and that they will know that it is He.
