Psalm 42:8   Thought/Prayer:  Life and LIFE.  Topics:  2 at end.

“Yahweh will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.”  WEB (Read this scripture and more at

When reviewing this Bible verse this morning, something struck me about it.  It’s nice, isn’t it, when your attention is called to something with a new thought about it?  It was this:

The psalmist refers, of course, to the Lord’s song being a prayer to God.  But this is not only about God, but to the God “. . . of my life.”  I’ve reviewed this scripture many times and never made the connection from today.  Yes, God is the God of our lives . . . and in more ways than one: two, specifically, here.

Perhaps we always think of God as the God of our life, meaning that He is our focus and our guide and our primary reference, as well as our salvation.  We think of Him as pre-eminent, and we try to live our lives accordingly, being guided by Him as our ultimate authority.

But today I see a second understanding here:  He is, literally, the God of our LIFE:  LIFE as in he gave it to us.  Our LIVES.  Without Him, you nor I nor anyone else on the planet would be here.

It’s really, quite huge.  Even in the process of creation, before humans were invented, so to speak, (although God didn’t have to invent us as such, knowing all along that humans would be right here, at His spoken command) . . . there was life being given to plants and animals.  But the LIFE He gave to His beloved human beings is above and beyond plants and animals.  In Psalm 8, v. 5, we are told that He created us humans “a little lower than the angels.”  Well, angels are awesome; so maybe we’re a little awesome.  We are!  We know this because of the intricacies of our bodies.  Because we’re created by Him.

I will probably be thinking about this as I go about my every-day life today, with His being the God of my life including the every-day.  I’ll smile a bit, though, when I think that He’s my life in at least two ways.  There are probably infinite other ways I know.

Lord, thank you for new insights You highlight for us.  Help us all not to miss these as we go along.  And thank you for bringing, once again to mind, the given fact that you give us LIFE.  Please let us pass this on to those struggling with great decisions about LIFE, in their lives.

Topics:  Just praise today, for our lives in the one Who gives us life. . . and thank Him for all the babies saved from abortion this month, who will get to live the lives planned for them.
