Psalm 54:3,4 (Pt. 2) Pillar, Cloud, Drum Major. Topics: 2 at end.
“For strangers have risen against me
And violent men have sought my life;
They have not set God before them. Selah.
Behold, God is my helper;
The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.â€
The psalmist says that strangers and violent persons have not set God before them, and then he sets those words in opposition to God’s position as his helper. So, if this is the positive as contrasted to negative, can we not assume that God wants those of us who are not strangers rising against his children, we who are not persons of violence, to set Him before us as our goal and standard?
Someone set before us might be a standard-bearer, or even in a band, the drum major goes before and leads the entire band in this direction or that. A drum major uses a long baton (or mace, in the military) and pumps and waves it up and down, stabbing the air, setting the pace, sometimes signaling left or right or straight ahead, sometimes calling out signals. Often drum majors are tall; then every members following in the band can see the baton and follow it, even if the drum major cannot be seen.
In the wilderness, God went ahead of his people either in a pillar of cloud by day or a pillar of fire by night (Ex. 13:21). Because His presence was represented by these unusual pillars or columns, his people would only have to look forward to be assured that they had Him with them at all times. And He led the way he chose, through fire and cloud.
Pro-lifers, we must make certain it is God we set before us and not our own ambitions, or hidden pride of accomplishment. Pray that it will be God and only God who leads the way to LIFE.
