Psalm 71:1-3   Thought/Prayer:  “Rescue the Perishing”.  Topics:  2 at end.

In You, O Lord, I Take Refuge
In you, Yahweh, I take refuge. Never let me be disappointed.
Deliver me in your righteousness, and rescue me. Turn your ear to me, and save me.
Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.”  (WEB)  (Read this scripture and more at

The psalmist (probably King David) asks God to deliver him in His (God’s) righteousness, and to rescue him.  God rescued David many times in His decades as King of Israel.

And who are the perishing who might be rescued in pro-life work?  The most obvious answer is:  The at-risk preborn persons who are destined for abortion to terminate their lives before they ever breathe air.

There is an old hymn, “Rescue the Perishing” (public domain) by Francis J. Crosby (Fannie) in 1869 and William H. Doane, 1870.  The theme of the song is to rescue those without salvation in Jesus Christ.  “Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save,” in the first verse; and, “Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died,” in the last verse.  The entire song is calling out for eternal life in Jesus.

But, pro-life individuals are into another type of rescue: saving the threatened babies in the wombs of their mothers, mothers who have decided to “terminate the pregnancy” which really means killing an unborn person.

We would not be able, probably, to make the analogy with this entire song.  Mothers who seem to have no option but abortion are not “erring ones,” or “fallen” – just in angst over what to do.  But they need Jesus.  They need to know His love and grace and the touch of His helping hands for their lives.  For those mothers in these situations, pray for them to come to know Jesus Christ as Savior.  The lyrics about this certainly apply!

Yes, mothers who come to know the Lord Jesus through the difficult situation of an unwanted pregnancy (because someone saw their need and share the good news of Jesus) are described below, perhaps.

In verse 4:  “Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.”
  Yes, in coming
to Jesus, out of anguish, these mothers’ hearts will vibrate with songs of love and praise.

“Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.”

Here are the entire lyrics, beautifully describing the lost unworthy soul’s salvation in Christ.

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

Though they are slighting Him, still He is waiting,
Waiting the penitent child to receive;
Plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
He will forgive if they only believe.

Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.

Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.

Lord, help us to live out the words of this hymn.  Help us to be faithful to our duty to “Rescue the perishing,” whether it is a soul’s salvation; a baby in the womb; or a mother who needs You.  May we truly be the greatest rescuers on Earth because of You.

Topics: Pray for God to guide you into rescuing efforts on Earth, with His great love for souls, babies, mothers.
