Psalm 84:3 (Pt. 2) Thought/Prayer: The Sparrow and the Swallow. Topics: 2 at end.
“Yes, the sparrow has found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.” AKJV (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com.)
This scripture gives us an insight into God’s beauty in nature, in the provision of God for motherhood. It’s a personal description, we might say. The swallow makes a nest for herself, in some way knowing that she will be laying her young – a way of knowing provided by any swallow’s creator: God.
In the spring, as we hear male birdsong as an attraction for possible future mates; as we see gander and goose paired off seemingly everywhere; as we later see lines of ducklings or goslings hurrying after mom and dad; how could anything be said any more beautifully concerning God’s natural creation than as described here? The lovely rhythm of these words and their subject matter makes for a poetic style . . . natural . . . as in nature.
Sparrows and swallows: smaller birds compared to all birds . . . nothing like the size of an ostrich or a majestic eagle: yet here mentioned – singled out as worthy of special verse – poetry-like. The psalmist is longing for the courts of God, as seen in the previous verse. Here he refers to these two species of small birds as in some manner being blessed by God in some way associated with God’s altars, in God’s courts.
The psalmist is here indicating God’s special task in directing these birds, through their nature given by Him, to find a house, a nest . . . all in preparation here, for motherhood.
We must pray for the insight seen here, God’s preparation in the natural world, for motherhood, as we counsel with those thinking to willfully terminate a pregnancy because of circumstances, emotions, or whatever. The lessons we can learn from the Bible’s parables of nature, or those that come to us through nature itself should be considered as important. So many parallels may be found.
Here, God has prepared a place for mother birds to make nests. He provides for human “nesting” as well, much of it based in all the preparations that gather toward the birth of a new person on Earth. Thank you, Lord, that you have given us the chance here in scripture to identify with a mother swallow in a nesting associated with Your courts.
