Psalm 8 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  Psalm 8 and the Power of Babes.  Topics: 2 at end.

“How Majestic is Your Name!
1O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! who have set your glory above the heavens.
2Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have you ordained strength because of your enemies, that you might still the enemy and the avenger.
3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;
4What is man, that you are mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him?
5For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and have crowned him with glory and honor.
6You made him to have dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet:
7All sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field;
8The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!”

What can it mean, here, when God says to us in this Psalm, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have you ordained strength because of your enemies, that you might still the enemy and the avenger.”?  God wrote this Psalm, through the inspiration He gave to David, the scribe we might say.  And God speaks of Himself in the words.  He inspires human beings to write, even if it is directly about Himself.

So what does God mean when he tells us that He has ordained “strength” because of His enemies – out of the mouths of babies, those who are nursing from their mothers?

Well, it may be a statement of the worth of the human life, particularly that of the human baby.  It could perhaps be a statement of the “power” of the newborn person; the “possibility” within the newborn.  A newborn baby is an innocent and therefore open to all God has for him or her.  (Of course this does not mean that a newborn makes no disturbance or never bothers others . . .  To the contrary!!  They tell us their needs by yelling!)  But God has made us, at birth, to be blank pages for our lives.  And according to this Psalm, this is greatly important to God.

So what about preborn babies who are unplanned, unwanted perhaps?  An embarrassment?  They are just as important as in any long-awaited pregnancy.  God tells us here:  From them come strength.  So we must stand for the life of each and every one, no matter the circumstance under which they were conceived by God.

Lord, help us not to forget this when the battle for created LIFE heats up on and on.

Topics:  Pray to never forget the worth of the baby in the womb.
