Psalm 8   Thought/Prayer:  A Baby, Honored.  Topics:  2 at end.

How Majestic is Your Name!
1O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! who have set your glory above the heavens.
2Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have you ordained strength because of your enemies, that you might still the enemy and the avenger.
3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;
4What is man, that you are mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him?
5For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and have crowned him with glory and honor.
6You made him to have dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet:
7All sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field;
8The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!  AKJV   (Read these scriptures and more at

Do you really think there could be stars to the number of “2” followed by 22 zeros?  Two – and ought and ought and ought and ought, ought, ought . . . , using that old term for zero, “ought.”  (“Let’s see,” says grandpa, pulling on his beard, “5 plus ought equals 5.  Uh-hm.”  This is the current estimate of the number of stars, according to some folks – folks who study things like this.

We humans have been given an inbred need to wonder. We wonder about so many entities in our world, in our universe.  Maybe we can say that we wonder with wonder about all God’s wonders.  (And, maybe we’ll be wandering while we’re wondering with wonder . . . . but again, a digress.)

Actually, if we do ever wander a bit under a night sky, clear and starry, we will come into wonder.  We just plain ol’ wonder about how the stars got there and how they have different colors according to their heat and so on and on.  A nighttime wandering can definitely lead to a lot of universal wonder.

The thing is, in spite of all the stars and the grandeur of “everything,” a little human baby is “crowned with glory and honor.”  In a Psalm extoling God’s creative and created universe, the Psalmist segues to God’s creation – mankind – who receives glory and honor from God.  Crowned, even.

Ought and ought and ought stars:  But mankind receives honor.

Maybe we can help someone praying about LIFE issues, here.  Maybe we can cultivate an awareness of God’s marvelous creation so huge and fantastic as are the stars and planets – but bring it down to baby-size – babies being, of course, except for Adam and Eve, foundational members of the human race.  Each one is honored.  We should honor them.  We can encourage those with whom we speak, to honor God with the LIFE of their baby.
