Psalm 94:19 (Pt. 2)  Thought/Prayer:  According to the Multitude.  Topics:  2 at end.

“According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, thy comforts have given joy to my soul.”  (DRB)  (Read this scripture and more at

This target verse is from the Douay-Rheims Bible, published in 1582 and again completed in 1609-10.  The previous verses – 14–18 – help explain verse 19.
“For the Lord will not cast off his people: neither will he forsake his own inheritance.
Until justice be turned into judgment: and they that are near it are all the upright in heart.
Who shall rise up for me against the evildoers? or who shall stand with me against the workers of iniquity?
Unless the Lord had been my helper, my soul had almost dwelt in hell.
If I said: My foot is moved: thy mercy, O Lord, assisted me.
According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, thy comforts have given joy to my soul.”

Verse 19 apparently includes an equation.  No algebraic algorithm here, but there does seem to be a cause-and-effect aspect.
It is this:  The more we need God, the more He gives us comforts and joy.  It’s sort of:  Need = gifts.  Gifts of grace.

It’s perhaps an unthought-of formula, so to speak . . . one not readily realized or even considered.  It happens naturally, and we don’t really think of it.  But right here, in this Douay-Rheims translation, we have it.  According to our sorrows, His comforts come, bringing our souls joy.  The more we hurt, the more He is there for us, leading us to joy.

Sorrow does come in life.  Just the natural order of things brings the end of life, the end of lives of those that we love.  Parents are always a generation older than their children.  We all lose grandparents, often before we are adults.  And, of course, sorrow comes in so many ways beyond losing someone to death.  There are so many ways to hurt in our hearts.

We usually don’t know ahead of time when sorrow may come, nor do we know the depth of it.  Sometimes we are surprised at sorrow’s impact.  But none of it is a surprise to God.

He holds us in His hands, and those hands give out grace from His heart.  Even when we don’t know of sorrows coming, even a multitude of them, we can still rest assured that when they do, His joy will come equal to the depths.  Comfort according to the depths.  And then joy-unexplainable, a new joy not coming except that we have “gone through.”

The impending death of an elder and struggling to resist the thought of euthanasia; the sorrow of someone loved struggling with handicaps or deep emotional issues . . . God is equal to all we feel so deeply.  Eventually, “Joy comes with the morning.”  (Psalm 30:5b: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” AKJV)

Lord, give us compassion on those who have the multitude of sorrows spoken of here.  We pray for them now, as we claim Your promise of comfort in keeping with sorrow.  Praise You for depths of comfort even unto joy, as we are in the depths to need you.
