Zechariah 4:10   Thought/Prayer:  Despise Not Small Things.  Topics:  2 at end.

“For who has despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.”  AKJV   (Read this scripture and more at

The Jews are in the process of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, after the first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians more than 500 years before the coming of Christ.  Then when God commissioned Zerubbabel to lead the building of the second temple in 538 BC, years before Christ, it was not going to be as large or as extravagant as the first temple built by King Solomon.  So in the eyes of some Jewish citizens, it was a “smaller” thing.

But God had other thoughts about this second major Temple for the worship of Himself.  This scripture describes how there will actually be rejoicing over this new Temple – people will rejoice when they see Zerubbabel holding the plumb line for the establishment of the true vertical line upon which to build the structure.

We know that God loves small things.  Think of a ladybug; how beautiful is one’s spotted back.  Think of a jonquil with a bumble bee raiding its nectar; and of the pollen on the bee’s feet that will pollinate other jonquils.  Nectar:  sticky . . . and small, in its individual flecks.  Or how about a hummingbird, tiny in its totality?  Yes, God loves small things.

Of course, on a pro-LIFE site such as this, we must include the beginnings of a new human person as a “small thing ” – probably not even 1 mm in length.  And yet, this smallness will grow and grow, multiplying and multiplying until an entire preborn person is formed and ready to enter the atmosphere of Earth.

We’re told here not to despise small things.  Small things turn into rejoicing things under God’s direction.  Who are we to question His purposes, never minding how small they may seem at the first?  Lord, help us to never cast a diminishing eye on something “small” that is of You, Lord.  You say it plainly here.  Help us to pass on to others the inherent value in that small person beginning to take shape within a mother’s womb.  Help us to help them see that great important of that small thing in particular.

Topics:  Pray for wisdom to transfer the value of small things to the heart of a mother considering abortion.
