2 Thessalonians 2:15   Thought/Prayer:  Stand Up for Jesus.  Topics:  2 at end.

”So then, brethren, stand your ground, and hold fast to the teachings which you have received from us, whether by word of mouth or by letter.”  (WNT)  (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com.)

How could we consider standing up for Jesus without taking a look at this old hymn by George Duffield, Jr., 1858, now in public domain?  The first verse has a great impact of meaning.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
ye soldiers of the cross!
Lift high his royal banner,
it must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory
his army he shall lead,
till every foe is vanquished,
and Christ is Lord indeed.

First, believers – those saved through the blood of Jesus Christ – are called soldiers.  Soldiers of the cross.  So are we?

Yes we are.  Because of the cross of Jesus Christ, those who come to belief are immediately enlisted in his army.  Here it is said (Ephesians 6:13):  “Therefore put on the complete armour of God, so that you may be able to stand your ground on the day of battle, and, having fought to the end, to remain victors on the field.”  (WNT)

The first verse of the old hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers” (public domain) has the cross heading the army onward:
“Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.”

It is well-fitting to mention here.  It is the cross that can be considered the standard for the Christian faith.  Christ’s crucifixion was the prelude to His rising from the dead and defeating death.  Without Christ’s His sacrifice, there would be no Christian faith.  (We can read about this in I Corinthians 15 where Paul explains the importance of it.)

Yes, we are soldiers of the cross, and it can be our standard (like a banner) to lead us ahead.  We stand ready to battle.  And, yes, Christ leads His army.  And there are victories after victories after victories.  It is up to God, working through us His soldiers, to bring the victories.  We must be ready to defend against losses.

And, in the finality of God’s plan, every foe will be vanquished, as so well-said in the song.  Christ is Lord.  Lord of all.

Lord, thank You that we are enlisted in Your army when we receive You as Savior and Lord.  And in one special way, let us not suffer loss:  That of our stand against the taking of human life before Your timing for death comes.  Help us to keep our eyes only on the cross as we march out to stand against planned premature death of any type.

Topics:  Pray for the ability to follow God’s marching orders in ministry and to STAND firm against the enemy, as part of His army.
