Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (Pt. 4)  Thought/Prayer:  Heart and Soul.  Topics:  2 at end.

Remember God’s Words
Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign on your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven on the earth.”  (AKJV)  (Read this scripture and more at

So to lay up God’s words in our souls has to do with allowing them into our lives as us, you and I, as we live out our lives.  When we allow God’s word into our hearts, some might consider that to be a matter of the Spirit, the heart being the considered center of a person’s body . . .  but yet the organ that is also considered, in many cultures, as the center where love resides.  (Interestingly, there is an old love song in public domain called “Heart and Soul.”)

This is no theological thesis.  But the Bible does say both the heart (the seat of love) and our soul (our personal me or you) are to lay up the treasure of God’s Word.  And it is in doing this that we are able to then minister throughout our lives, knowing that we are basing our thoughts and actions on the foundation of the Word(s) of God.  When we memorize scripture, we are building a heart-and-soul inner receptacle filled with options of wisdom which then take us into service.

As we stand for created LIFE, may we be careful to know enough scripture to be able to explain the foundation of life as we see it in the Bible:  God.  God is the foundation of all LIFE.  And when our elderly auntie or uncle is facing life’s end, if we have this receptacle of wisdom in our hearts and our souls, we will be better able to draw from it and pray for our loved persons and will be able to better decide for them what is needed in their latter days.

Lord, help us to be faithful to read and memorize and meditate upon Your Word as we lay it up in hearts and souls.
