Genesis 21:19 Thought/Prayer: The Bible’s Beautiful Waters, A Drink for the Lad. Topics:  2 at end.

“And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, What ails you, Hagar? fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in your hand; for I will make him a great nation. And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.  (AKJV)  )  Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com.)

Hagar, who was a maid for Sarah, Abraham’s wife, had borne Abraham a son, Ishmael, at Sarah’s suggestion.  Later Sarah bore Isaac to Abraham.  Sarah resented Hagar and her son, so Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar away.  We see in this passage that Abraham did this; they wandered in the wilderness until all their water was gone.  Here again is the significance of water . . . and the significance of God’s concern.

After Hagar had Ishmael sit under a shrub, she cried – and so did Ishmael.  The account tells us that it was actually Ishmael that God heard.  Here is God’s care for a child in need.  It is also God’s care for what might be called a single mom, Hagar.  She had no husband to care for her and her child.  God provided a well of water, and Ishmael and she could drink.

And along with the water, Hagar received a promise from God, that He would make Ishmael into a great nation.  How Hagar must have felt, to have this pinpointed care from God, just for her and her boy.  Even though rejected and thrown out of Abraham’s life, she, this single mom with a little boy with nothing to drink, knew she was important to none Other than God.  God spoke to her, calling out through an angel!  How awed Hagar must have been.

The angel tells her to go to her son and hold him and to not be afraid.  “Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.”  God hears children and their prayers.

If only parents today could realize that God has an interest in their “kids.”  Might knowledge like this have its effect on young women, or girls, who are pregnant and don’t know what to do?  Our prayer is today, Lord, that You will speak to those who are thinking of terminating a baby’s life within the womb and let the mother know that when the baby comes into the world, You have an ear tuned toward their voices.

Topics:  Pray that frightened pregnant women will be able to realize how much God loves all of their preborn babies . . . and ever after in the world.
