I Corinthians 1:20, 21   Thought/Prayer:  Wise Foolishness.  Topics:  2 at end.

“Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the lawyer of this world? Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  For seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn’t know God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe.”  (WEB)  (Read this scripture and more at http://prayerpivot.com)

We’re thinking about God’s pleasure . . . actually, God’s good pleasure in this passage from I Corinthians.  We’re told that through the foolishness of preaching, people are saved.  That was true “way back when,” when Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in the city of Corinth, Greece.  It is true today.

But why the word foolishness?  The gospel message of forgiveness and salvation in Jesus Christ seems like foolishness to folks who have not yet believed.  Perhaps it does not seem practical (because we can’t see salvation like we see physical objects); or it seems too simple to believe . . . (nothing that big could be so simple) (but it can be! And is!); or minds of reason cannot reach beyond “reason.”  There are so many ways in which the people of Earth can find persuasions to think the Christian faith is foolishness.  Maybe at one time, you or I did.

But God takes great pleasure in bringing people to Himself through this so-called foolishness.  What a pairing of concepts here – foolish wisdom and wise foolishness.  Could we almost call them an oxymoron, the combining of two things that seem so opposite, yet in concept are not?  The seeming foolishness of the preaching of Christ is actually the most non-foolish thing.  It is, actually, wisdom, the greatest wisdom.  It is wise to believe in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice to offer us salvation and eternal life.

So, when we who have come to belief realize this, then it is our task to continue to preach this foolishness, that is actually wisdom.  So here is perhaps where we need to pray and support those who work or volunteer at pregnancy crisis centers where the policy is to share the gospel.  So many hurting men and women have come to faith, have been saved, through these great ministries.  Not through the wisdom of the world, but through God and His pleasure in it, have they come to the Lord . . . and so often saved their unborn persons (babies) from death in the womb.

Lord, let us pray for the many men and women who minister so faithfully at these centers.  Give them Your wisdom as they share You with the struggling, hurting people who come through the doors.  Thank You for Your pleasure in turning the “foolishness” of the gospel into wisdom that the world needs so desperately.

Topics:  Pray for employees and volunteers at pregnancy crisis centers, for Gods’ wisdom in sharing the totally non-foolish gospel.
